The Berry Sourdough Bakery and Cafe is owned by Jelle and Freya Hilkemeijer.
The heart of our business is reflected in the simplicity and warmth of our rustic barn-like premises. Here we make and bake our European-style pastries, cakes and savoury treats every day. The wonderful sourdough breads available are baked in the two big woodfired ovens by artisan baker Joost Hilkemeijer.
In the cafe our chefs use only the freshest ingredients, combined with simple techniques to bring out the natural flavours of our seasonal, local produce. We source our ingredients from those suppliers who share our commitment to quality and sustainability.
Built in 1895, the heritage-listed building originally housed a produce store on what was then the main road in Berry, leading down to the ferry at Broughton Creek. This was followed by a bakery from 1915 until around 1970, a small goods warehouse, a surfboard factory and a gallery restaurant. Jelle found the building in a state of disrepair in March 2001, and together with Joost opened the doors for business in Easter 2002.
